Since being here in Cabo San Lucas I have had the pleasure of meeting quite a wonderful person, Tracy Ernst. Tracy is a certified yoga instructor here, and hosts both public and private yoga classes. Every month on the full moon, Tracy has a Full Moon yoga class on Cascadas Beach. The first time I attended was fantastic. To be on the beach, watching the sunset, seeing the full moon appear above the horizon, and listening to the waves while performing yoga was great. This past time, I didn´t participate but took photos instead, and although I wasn't doing the positions I could still feel the energy and the tranquility. Got up early today, had a bit of café con pan, and walked all the way to the end of Medano beach where there are beautiful boulders and rocks bordering the sea. We climbed in and out and among the rocks, barefoot and sweating for about 20-30 minutes. We found a small beach on the other side where we sat and watched the ocean for a while, drinking pineapple juice. It was quiet except for the sound of our breathing and the magnificent waves crashing upon the shore. The Earth is such a beautiful and powerful thing and gives us so much; most of us forget to wonder, appreciate, and admire its beauty. We take and take until there is nothing left to give and then we move on.

Fede, Frankie, Cecilia and I hiked up to the observatory that overlooks all of Cabo San Lucas the other night. We made it to the top just in time to watch the sunset. Frankie had some strange gadget that attaches inside his shoe and calculates how far he has walked; from our house to the top was exactly 2.8 miles. It was stunning to see the scale of Cabo San Lucas from that height. I had never realized how truly large of a city it is. We stayed after sunset so I could get some night shots; this was a 30 second exposure of the marina side.

I got some really happy news a few days ago! The photo I submitted to National Geographic back in March is going to be featured in the upcoming September issue of National Geographic Traveler. I danced around the room when I got the email. National Geographic magazines have always been present in my house since I was young; the photos and stories surely a huge inspiration to me then as well as now. I think I´ll go buy some chocolate...

I have definitely been slacking on editing photos in the past month. It's funny how just living life gets in the way of doing important things sometimes. These are some photos from when Sarah, Tom and I backpacked in Guatemala during our break from working at the SOS. We traveled through the northern part of Guatemala around Lago de Izabal. It's amazing how different Guatemala and Honduras are although they share a border. There was an amazing vibrancy and life to Guatemala...music and people dancing in the streets, kids laughing and playing, and breathtaking landscapes. I loved Honduras as well, because I made bonds there and felt connections...but I found the people and the country were more reserved and relaxed compared to Guatemala.

Sammy, Tom, Sarah and I had the pleasure of tasting the famous Cobra Vodka. Homemade vodka with an entire cobra curled up inside the bottle, as well as ginseng and I believe a small amount of the cobra venom. Roy and Dina convinced me to drink it straight out of the bottle...and I did. It was a little unnerving because as you go to take a sip, you can see the cobra's face staring straight down the neck of the bottle at you. The vodka had an amazingly smooth taste and after wards my mouth and throat were tingly. I can't say I would drink it all the time but it was awesome to try it.

One of our first weekends in Tela, Sammy, Tom, Sarah and I decided to walk to the Botanical Garden that was a bit down the road from where we were living. Apparently it's one of the largest in the world. So we set off on the main road, not truly realizing how far of a walk it actually was, when a truck pulled over and offered to drop us off there. We thanked him and quickly piled into the back. Once we got to the Garden, we paid the entry fee and then hitched another ride down the dirt road that led towards the mountain. Unfortunately we went during the wrong season. Not much was in bloom and a lot of the Garden was closed off but what we did see was beautiful. We saw a huge bamboo forest, Tom swam in a secluded lagoon, and we were lucky enough to cross paths with a massive line of marching leaf cutter ants carrying bits of leaves and flowers.

A bunch of the volunteers and I had the pleasure of traveling to La Ceiba to watch a futbol game one night. Asombraba! It was unlike anything I have ever experienced. People were starting fires, setting off smoke bombs, chanting, screaming, climbing the fence, and just enjoying life. We were proudly routing for Victoria, the futbol team of La Ceiba. The first few pictures were taken outside of the stadium and the last few were taken after Victoria won the game. Everyone went crazy. It was awesome being in the middle of it all, having people pushing and running past, jumping and celebrating. Complete adrenaline rush. The best part was that Tom, Joe, and Sammy were in the middle with all the crazy Victoria fans getting pushed and shoved and screaming their heads off as well. By the end of the night our eyes were burning and our voices hoarse. Es algo yo nunca me olvidare.

I just recently returned back to New York from my travels in Central America. I lived in Tela, Honduras for 3 months while working at a childrens orphanage. Some of the children come from abuse, some from neglect, and some have no families at all. From the very first day, my heart was filled with love and my face with a permanent smile. At times it was challenging as well as frustrating but it was worth it. I made such incredible bonds with the kids; their faces are forever imprinted in my memories. I hope to one day return to the SOS and see how they've grown and progressed in life. I also made two amazing friends while in Tela; Sarah Lees and Tom Askew. I don't think I could have met/bonded with two greater people. We spent everyday of the 3 months together and I can happily say I love them both with all of my heart and hope to see them very soon. Anyway I wasn't sure if I should just start editing random images that I like or start from the very beginning of the trip. So I decided to start from the beginning...these are some images from Porvenir, Honduras where I spent my first week. I have a ton of images that I need to go through and edit still so I'll be super busy for the next few weeks. At least I can focus on something other than being cold...

I had a pretty crazy weekend a couple weeks ago. I worked until 5 on Friday, packed up the car, drove to Connecticut in which I arrived around 11 pm. I then awoke around 6 am only to get in the car again with my sister-in-law to drive to New Hampshire for the modifieds race. I have yet to experience anything like being at a race. The noise fills your ears, the smell permeates your nose, and the rubber and dirt cloud your eyes at times. I find it absolutely thrilling. On top of it all, my brother is on the pit crew for the #28 modified car driven by Woody Pitkat. At the end of the day my butt is cold and sore from the stands and my cheeks are stuck in a permanent smile. I had the pleasure of documenting the race this time and these are a few of the ones I like.

The past week I've been playing with long exposures at night. It's something I've never ventured into before, not because I didn't want to, but because I never really thought about trying it. In the top photo, two friends and I went for a late night ride through the fields and stopped on the top of the mountain to lay in the hay and look up at the stars. The colors from the sunset were still lingering and I thought it was fascinating, so I decided to try and capture the light, the color, and a few stars...20 seconds later and that's what I had. The bottom photo is the result of a 40 second exposure from the porch of my house as I watched a lightning storm start rolling over the mountain opposite me. I'm really excited about the results so far...I'm going to keep playing and see what happens. Who knows...maybe I'll end up with an hour long exposure.

I took a little road trip up to Vermont to see a very good friend, Linzy Vos. We haven't seen each other in almost three years, so I packed my clothes and cameras, grabbed the dog, and jumped in the car. It was about a 6 hour trip up but definitely worth every minute. We went hiking, swimming, rock jumping, and flower picking...basically Linzy is good for my soul. I forgot how great it felt to be in her presence and how easily we can pick up with one another exactly where we left off. A lot has happened in both our lives in the past few years but nothing compared to what she is going through at the moment. It made me realize that life is too short, that little stupid things that people bicker about are exactly that...stupid, don't sit around thinking and worrying about something that you can't change, and if you care about someone let them know.

On Saturday around 4:00 p.m. my dog Jager passed on. I've never cried so much for another living creature as I did for him. It was too much for my mom, so I held him in my lap as he took his last few breaths. I wish he could have made it until Spring, so he could have rolled in the grass one last time and felt the warmth of the sunshine on his back. But I'm also just glad that he is no longer in pain...

I just got back two more rolls of film from my trip to Peru and these are a few of my favorites from those rolls. The mountains in Peru are absolutely astonishing and breathtaking. I can honestly say that these photos do the landscape no justice...go in person! haha

I realized today that I still have a lot of film that I haven't even edited yet! I've been back for a full month now and my head has just been spinning. I've been really busy with life in general...and I'm still trying to get used to the cold and the snow. I'm proud to admit that I am still cooking/eating rice, beans, plantains, yucca, and avocado salads as much as possible. I even have my mother hooked.

After romping around Lima for a few days, we then traveled to Cuzco, Peru. Our plan was to make our way up to Machu Picchu, but upon arrival in Cuzco we realized we wouldn't be making that trip. Machu Picchu and everywhere for miles around was getting the most rain they had had in about 15 years, causing mudslides, flooding, and a lot of trapped people. We spent about 5 days in Cuzco and each day, we saw at least 10-15 helicopters fly overhead transporting people, food, and water. Although we didn't get to see Machu Picchu, we were at least able to travel and see the other ruins around Cuzco(Ollantaytambo, Moray, Chincheros, Sacsahuaman, and Qenko). This just means I have to save for another trip to Peru, hike the Inca Trail up to the famous mountain top and finally see my dream, Machu Picchu. These photos are of the day we rode horses about an hour up through the mountains to a beautiful valley where the horses were set free to drink and eat. While there we saw a small set of ruins, spoke with a woman herding her sheep, and explored a small crevice in the mountain with stepping stones leading you across the water. I couldn't have asked for a better day.

At the end of a rocky pier in Lima, Peru I found where the Pelicans and other smaller birds hangout. After sneaking up on them to take photos, and accidentally scaring them off, I realized that it was not only a hangout but also a pelican graveyard. I find the process of, not necessarily death itself, but the decomposition afterward to be very interesting. So, I called Jaime over to where I was so she could observe with me. Together we discovered the remains of over 10 dead pelicans and to our surprise, the remains of a baby seal among the rocks too.

So I have finally returned from my 2 month backpacking excursion! A wonderful friend, Kaahele, and I backpacked around the Florida Keys, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua. It was an experience of a lifetime. Kelly and I split after Nica: she traveled to Arizona and I continued on to Peru where I met up with my cousin Jaime for about 11 days. I unfortunately had my camera stolen upon arriving in Peru, so I only have film from Peru and my return to Florida. I am currently scanning, editing, and writing up a story that I will be sending out to a few travel magazines. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Anyway...this is a portrait of a friend of mine that I took before I returned to the bitter cold of New York. I suppose you could say this is my very first portrait...normally I cut people's heads off and just focus on the body language.

I just recently took a trip to Three Forks, Montana to take part in a photo expedition with two awesome photographers, Val Westover and Stephanie Adriana. While there I stayed on the incredible Montana Horses ranch, owned by Kail and Renee Mantle, who are two of the hardest working and genuine people I have had the pleasure of meeting. They all immediately made me feel at home and I grew quite close to them in my short time on the ranch. Being in Montana was incredibly humbling for me and was the best decision I've made in quite some time. Not only do I feel my photography grew, but I learned a lot about myself as an individual. On our way out of the train, we met a very kind man and he told us the history of the train, a bit about the town, and a bit about himself. His name is Johnny. I now have his address and I plan on sending him some photos and writing to him from time to time. It's always good to meet someone new and, in a way, become and stay a part of their lives. I believe it makes you a richer and better person.

Rob and I drove to Albany last week to stay with friends for a few days and on the way I spotted this train off the side of the road. Thankfully I had been prepared and had brought my cameras and a good amount of film. The train was absolutely gorgeous. The colors, the textures, the peacefulness of it, everything just blew my mind. I could have sat and observed the inside of it's belly all day if time would have allowed me to. I'm hoping if we ever have future visits to Albany that I will again be able to stop at this intriguing, beautiful beast and take more photos.

I finally made my way over to Sarah's house, a professor from college. It was wonderful to see her after so long, and to just chat and catch up about life. We talked photography, horses, travel, school, everything. She gave me some really great ideas and this was one of them. She suggested that seen as my mother has so many rescue animals, especially dogs, that I look at Elliott Erwitt. And so the project has begun.

Just some recent panoramics I did with the holga. I'm considering doing a series of panoramics with a quality camera and see how they end up. I'm really intrigued by the idea the holga gives, of overlapping images that could conceptually be a single image on their own...but can also become part of a panoramic...and work. Sounds like a project!

I have been with Sophie for almost a year. I am moving back upstate for a month or two and then possibly going to school in Maine so I had to say goodbye to her. Today was my last day...I made her a book and these are a few of the images I put in that I took with the Holga. I'm going to miss my little Chickadee, but life has to go on for everyone I guess. I know she will grow to be a beautiful little lady.

This past time I went home, I found and went to a new junkyard so I could finally add to the junk series on my website. I'm pretty happy with some of what I got. (These are just a couple)
It's funny how I found the junkyard. I was sitting outside on the porch of my house, and I could see something shining on the mountain across from me. So I went inside, got the binoculars and looked through. To my surprise the shining was the sunlight bouncing off at least 20 cars scattered in an opening in the trees. So I got my camera and I walked from my house to the other mountain. The whole thing took me about 4 hours. It was exciting not knowing what I was going to find.

Computer Trouble

So, my computer crashed yesterday morning. Meaning I didn't back up some of the things I had just scanned, and they got erased. I'm not too sad though because at least I still have the actual negative (I can always scan again) but also because I wasn't too crazy about some of the things I had just shot. This weekend I shot 9 more rolls of film, which I am going to get processed tomorrow. I am much more confident about this batch than the last. I'm starting a new project, so hopefully in the next week I can start scanning again and get some pictures up.

I've been doing this series of polaroids called "Off With Their Heads" for a while now. I actually want to start incorporating this idea into portraits done with film. If you looked at my website, you would have seen some of the portraits I was working on before. I realize now that they aren't very strong. I think my problem with including faces in portraits is that I become intimidated by the presence of the person rather than focusing on the shapes and forms their bodies make, and the way they fit into their surroundings. Therefore, I am going to try the technique I explored in these polaroids I've been playing with, eventually taking the existing portraits off the website and adding some, hopefully, new and exciting ones...
